Granada's largest local municipality is headed by the pictoresque village of Monachil nestled in the foothills directly beneath the ski terrain of Sierra Nevada. The valley has been deeply cut by the Monachil river flowing year round as a result of the annual snowfalls in the high mountains above.

As a result, the valley itself is full of fertile growth and culture as well as home to some stunning terrain for exploration whether on foot, bike or otherwise. Nearby "Los Cahorros" is an impressive gorge with rock walls towering on either side making for some of the most highly reputed rock climbing the country has to offer, (and perhaps even Europe).
All around, local farmers make the most of the land for their crops and plantations including corn, potatoes, olives, almonds, cherries and so on. The backdrop to the valley are the impressive high peaks of Sierra Nevada, snow covered for a good percentage of the year, (primarily November - end of May).

A recently re-surfaced road provides direct access to the ski resort from Monachil village thereby avoiding the need to backtrack to Granada and then take the main road from there.

As a result of the areas natural resources, much development is taking place in the area and within the village itself and rural accommodation here is becoming very much a popular choice to city hotels. The village is well linked by a public bus services to Granada city, just 8 kilometres away. It also lies at the base of a recent resurfaced route up to the ski terrain itself.
