Granada & Sierra Nevada - The Ski Resort in Summer

Whilst Sierra Nevada may primarily be recognised for its winter activities, (skiing, snowboarding etc.), there is much to see and do during the spring, summer and autumn months.

Ski Resort in SummerA visit to the resort village, Pradollano, during the summer months can be quite a shock, particularly if you know it during the ski season. What is usually a bustling centre thriving full of activitiy, changes to one of extreme serenity. In fact, particularly during the month of May & early June, you may well believe it to be somewhat of a ghost town.

There is however a small community of locals who live here throughout the year along with employees of the resort organisers, Cetursa. General maintenance work and resort development is carried out during the summer in order to continually promote and improve the touristic services available.

You will still find a skeletal infrastructure of bars, restaurants and supermarkets, open throughout the summer months. The only exception to this may be during the month of May when in general everybody takes a well deserved holiday after the strains of a busy winter season.

Ski Resort in SummerRelaxation, hiking, outdoor pursuits and a general appreciation for nature in its true vastness and beauty are essentially the themes for summer breaks to the resort.
Once the snow disappears, a new world is revealed. Sierra Nevada offers some of the most varied and greatest collections of flora and fauna to be found anywhere in Europe. This is mainly due to the impressive vertical drop from the high, mid and low mountains which aid in creating it's own self-induced micro-climate.

The natural and national park of Sierra Nevada practically commences at sea level, rising to almost 3,500m above, (about 11,500ft). At lower altitudes, you will find areas of dense, varied woodland and forests which gradually thin out towards the mid range altitudes to quite stark and barren terrain above 2,000m....albeit from a distant glance!! Sierra Nevada consists of Spain's largest concentration of peaks over 3,000 metres, including the highest peak itself, the "Mulhacen".

Ski Resort in SummerNumerous activities are organised in and around the resort including hiking, horse trekking, mountain biking and paragliding. Mountain bike enthusiasts may be aware that Sierra Nevada figures very importantly in the cycling world having hosted the World Championship Downhill Racing events in the summer of 2000. Car enthusiasts may be interested to know that companies such as Mercedes, BMW and Volkswagen make the most of the highest road in europe during the summer months for testing their latest models to the extreme. Whether you are looking to do nothing but chill-out reading books and brushing up on your tan or venture out into the wild, summer in Sierra Nevada definately has it for you.
